Our Programs

All of our programs at Rejoyce Caledon Childcare follow an inquiry and play-based approach, which fosters the development of young minds by providing opportunities for creative, collaborative, and critical-thinking skills.

Pre-School (ages 2.5-4)

Staff in the preschool room use “How Does Learning Happen” (HDLH) as a guide when developing curriculum. The goal is to use the children’s natural curiosity and support children's development by allowing them to explore their surroundings and discover answers to questions they might have. One of the questions that arose out of their curiosity on one such discussion was “Where does mud come from?”. The children used tools and materials to create mud and developed some theories about where mud comes from. Besides developing their theories, children engage in literacy through activities such as learning to write the alphabet, counting rhymes, singing multicultural songs, and finger plays at group times. "The children are practicing routines and transitions due to changes resulting from the start of the school year. The new children are happily settling in, with the help of the older preschoolers in the room. One of our goals is to help the new children and families  become comfortable in their new environment. Some favourite learning activities are group-time and circle time, and learning letters and numbers through songs, poems, chants and puppet plays. This week they've been exploring the environment through their 5 senses.  In order to extend their learning, the children often bring in objects that are interesting to them from outside and further explore them in the classroom."

Kindergarten (ages 4-6)

The Kindergarten program at Rejoyce is all about the engagement of children through various learning opportunities based on their curiosity. The learning environment in the program is responsive to children's interests; we provide opportunities for children to make their thinking come to life! Read up on what our kindergarten classroom looks like at the start of the school year:

"The school year has begun with a bang for the FDK 2 group. The children in this group have been working on establishing rules, routines and transitions, getting to know each other and developing friendships with one another. Children have been practicing responsibility and independence, for example when they sign themselves in and out on the Daily Visual Attendance. They have been participating in our Daily Drawing activity, writing and telling us about their interests. They have also been working on their writing skills including holding writing utensils, scribbling, developing a sense of letters, numbers and shapes."

"The children of Room 107 have been practicing their engineering skills! Not only have they been really engaged with various building materials, but they have also been working on their math skills as they learn to measure the length of their structures. Once they've built their structures, they have been making blueprint drawings of their buildings. To finish off their tasks as engineers, they have been communicating with teachers about the importance of what they have built and what is happening in their structures.

School-Age (ages 6-12)

The School-Age program revolves around learning advanced interpersonal, creative, and goal-setting skills with their peers in the program. They learn skills like emotional literacy, leadership and social skills such as cooperation, sharing, and problem-solving. The School-Age program has clubs such as Reading Club, Homework Club, and Chess Club. They also focus on preparing children on how to cope with bullying, and how to empathize with people from different ethnic backgrounds. Read up on some on what our school-age program looks like at the start of the school year:

"The children in room 108 have been involved in getting to know each other. They were engaged in a project that included writing and drawing all about themselves. They explored how unique everyone's fingerprints are. To create a sense of belonging, the children shared their ideas about eating healthy and nutritious meals and learned about the different kinds of food and fruits and vegetables they all eat. One of our goals is to learn more about what constitutes healthy eating."

"In room 110 we are getting to know each other, and learning about things that represent us. The children  have been interested in role playing "school" and exploring the roles of 'teacher' and  'student'. This has lead to a discussion of leadership skills and the children will take responsibilities such as helping to set up snack, tiding up the chairs etc.  The children are also busy building structures using lego and 3d materials. We have set some long term goals as a group. These include healthy eating, and reading more."

Seeds of Empathy

In society, we generally measure what we treasure. Traditionally, schools have measured children’s competence in subject areas. Roots of Empathy measures the affective side of children’s knowledge, understanding, and attitudes.
— Mary Gordon, Founder/President, Roots of Empathy

Our Seeds of Empathy program is designed to expose the children at Rejoyce Childcare to infants at an early age so that they may develop empathic connections with other children. Research shows that interaction with the infants in the program has a significant positive impact on the children, and helps them learn to connect, cooperate, and socialize with others in their environment.
